What is the new Australian government battery rebate?
The Australian Government is launching the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, with the aim to make home batteries more affordable and reduce energy bills by helping households store and use more of their own solar power.
Starting 1 July 2025, the federal government is offering a 30% rebate on eligible home battery systems. This works out to around $372 per kilowatt-hour, meaning a 10 kWh battery could save you about $3,720.
Key details:
Starts: 1 July 2025
Available to: All households, small businesses, and community facilities
Eligibility: New or existing solar users installing a VPP-ready battery
Retroactive installs: Systems installed from 6 April 2025 may qualify
No income test: The rebate is open to everyone
FAQs
-
Prices vary depending on the battery brand, capacity, and installation needs. On average, expect to pay between $10,000 and $18,000 fully installed (excluding the federal rebate, which will bring this cost down further). We offer quotes tailored to your home and usage, with finance options available.
-
Yes. The Australian Government is introducing a nationwide rebate for home batteries under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, starting on 1 July 2025. This federal scheme offers a rebate of around 30% off the cost of eligible battery systems — roughly $372 per kilowatt-hour. That means a typical 10 kWh battery could attract a rebate of about $3,720.
The rebate is open to all households, small businesses, and community organisations. It’s available whether you’re installing a new solar and battery system or just adding a battery to an existing setup. There’s no income test, and systems installed after 6 April 2025 may also qualify, as long as they meet the program’s requirements. One key condition is that the battery must be VPP-ready, meaning it can be connected to a virtual power plant in future.

Yes, most existing solar systems can be upgraded with a battery. We’ll check the inverter and system size to make sure it's compatible, and recommend the best battery for your setup.
-
Tesla announced the Powerwall 3 (with higher power output and integrated solar inverter) in the US, but it's not available in Australia yet. No firm date has been given for its local release.
-
For many Brisbane homes, yes. A battery helps you use more of your solar power, avoid rising electricity prices, and reduce grid reliance. It’s especially valuable if you use energy at night or want blackout protection.
-
Both are high-quality systems. Tesla Powerwall is an all-in-one unit with a sleek app and integrated inverter. You can stack Tesla powerwalls next to each other if you need more storage. BYD is modular, meaning you can start small and expand over time. We’ll help you choose the right option for your home.
-
Most battery installations take one day. If you’re combining with a new solar system, it may take slightly longer. We’ll confirm timelines when quoting and keep you updated every step of the way.
-
Yes, if your system is set up with backup power. We can configure your battery to keep key circuits (like lights, fridge, and Wi-Fi) running during an outage. Just let us know what you’d like covered.
-
Home batteries are low maintenance. The system monitors itself and alerts you via the app if anything needs attention. We’re always available for local support if needed. Just give us a call!
-
Yes. With export tariffs (ridiculous new tax by the government ) coming in, batteries let you store excess energy instead of sending it to the grid. That means fewer export charges and more savings.
-
Yes. Many EV owners use stored solar power to charge their car overnight. A smart battery system can help manage this automatically for maximum efficiency and lower charging costs.
